Save the Ogallala Aquifer PDF  | Print |  E-mail

water icon One of the largest aquifers in the country may now be threatened. According to decades of government approved water maps the Ogallala Aquifer and other aquifers sit underneath Andrews County, Texas, and thus underneath and/or precariously close to a radioactive waste dump in Andrews County.

Unless proper precautions have been taken, this dumping could put primary sources of drinking water and agricultural water for eight states at significant risk.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) approved a permit for Waste Control Specialists to operate a radioactive waste dump in Andrews County for fifteen years. The dump can accept waste from dozens of nuclear reactors, and the result is that millions of people will have a major water source imperiled for thousands of years.

WE CAN SAVE OUR PRECIUOS WATER SOURCE
Even though the Texas legislature and the TCEQ has already given their approval for this dangerous dump, we have the ability to stop this in its tracks. The United States Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu must give final approval for Waste Control Specialists to receive all of this radioactive material from other states. We need to contact Texas Governor Rick Perry, Secretary Chu, and the members of the federal delegation and tell them to please stop this insanity of permitting the dumping of highly radioactive garbage on top of the Ogallala Aquifer.
